Potions feel complicated at first, but once you understand the system, brewing becomes one of the most satisfying parts of late-game survival. A well-stocked potion chest changes every dangerous situation in your favor.

Setting Up Your Brewing Stand

To craft a Brewing Stand, you need:

  • 1 Blaze Rod (dropped by Blazes in Nether Fortresses)
  • 3 Cobblestone

Place the blaze rod above the three cobblestone blocks in a crafting table.

To use the brewing stand, you also need Blaze Powder as fuel. Craft it by putting a single blaze rod in the crafting grid — it gives you two blaze powder. One blaze powder lasts for 20 brewing operations.

Place the brewing stand, open it with right-click, and put blaze powder in the top-left fuel slot.

The Three-Bottle Setup

Brewing works most efficiently when you fill all three bottom slots with glass bottles at once. You can brew three potions simultaneously using the same ingredients.

Glass bottles are crafted from three glass blocks in a V shape. Fill them with water by right-clicking any water source.

Base Potions

All potion recipes start with an Awkward Potion. To make one:

  • Place water bottles in the bottom three slots.
  • Add Nether Wart (found in Nether Fortresses) to the top ingredient slot.
  • Wait for the brewing to finish.

Nether Wart is the most important brewing ingredient. Find it in the soul sand patches near fortress staircases and bring back as much as you can.

Essential Potions

Modifiers

Three items change the properties of most potions:

| Item | Effect | |------|--------| | Redstone Dust | Extends duration | | Glowstone Dust | Increases potency (shorter duration) | | Gunpowder | Converts to Splash Potion (throwable) | | Dragon's Breath | Converts to Lingering Potion (area effect) |

A Splash Potion of Weakness is required to cure zombie villagers. A Lingering Potion of Healing works as a persistent healing zone — useful in group fights or with allies.

Splash Potions and Arrows of Effect

Add gunpowder to any potion to make it throwable. Splash potions affect anyone in the blast radius, including you.

In a Crafting Table, surround a splash potion with arrows to create Tipped Arrows. Arrows of Healing, Slowness, or Poison are powerful ranged tools.

Storing Your Potions

Build a dedicated brewing area with a chest for ingredients and a separate chest for finished potions sorted by type. Run a dedicated farm for:

  • Nether Wart — Farm it on soul sand in any dimension.
  • Sugar Cane — For Sugar (Speed potions).
  • Melons — For Glistering Melon Slices (Healing potions).

Recommended Loadout for Combat or Dungeons

  • 2x Fire Resistance (extended)
  • 2x Healing II
  • 1x Strength II
  • 1x Night Vision (extended)

This set handles almost every dangerous situation in the game.

Final Thoughts

Brewing transforms Minecraft from raw survival into strategic play. The investment in going to the Nether for nether wart and blaze rods pays off enormously once your brewing stand is running.

Start with Fire Resistance and Healing. Build from there. Once you have a full potion loadout, even the End Dragon becomes a manageable challenge.
